The German course level A1 (basic speaker) is the so-called breakthrough or beginner level. It is a course for students without any or very few knowledge of the German language. We work in our German language studies during the NTU Fall Semester 2011 with the text and workbook (incl. CDs) Berliner Platz 1 NEU. Our language work focus very much on phonetic, pronunciation and the first reading, to create a familiar relation with the German language. It is important to acquire a basically well and correct spoken language. Well spoken -even simple- words improve also the listening comprehension and lead later to a better comprehension of a whole sentence without any written supports. We exercise German grammar, nouns with their definite articles (der, die das). We learn the German verb conjugation (das Zeitwort, 'word of time' or more precisely das Tatwort, 'word of action'). The German verb express particularly -as we know already from English- what we 'do' in time, in present or past. These are only some examples of our grammar work. In the first written texts (Textproduktion) we exercise the construction of words, sentences, the so-called German syntax. The oral expression and active participation of every student is not only desired and welcomed, but important to train and taste the spoken language. 'Learning by speaking' is the most effective way to remind and learn the foreign language. Our fall semester language work consists in an acquisition of the first three lessons until the mi-term examination and then the whole six lessons of our book until the final examination. Very important for this acquisition is beside of the language work in our class a continuous and intensive work of each student (or in groups) at home. The workbook and the CDs are a great help to deepen and solidifying understanding and comprehension of each lesson.
